By no means, Rihanna is fortunate

By no means, Rihanna is fortunate. One day she was just another beach-dwelling island girl, skipping school and absorbing a mix of calypso, reggae and American hip-hop at the clubs in her hometown of St. Michael, trying to get autograph of some superstar. The next day she herself became one of the most famous Caribbean pop stars and would be sitting in the company of mega music moguls. Besides ripping traditional reggae tracks like a seasoned dancehall queen, the stunning 17-year-old Rihanna possesses a powerful singing voice that conjures up feelings and experiences way beyond her years. By the way Rihanna had won a high school talent contest with a performance of Mariah Carey's 'Hero', her vocal training was limited to singing in her bedroom. 'I would hold a broom like a mike stand,' Rihanna says. 'My neighbors would complain, they always knew when I was home.' Nevertheless, aside from winning her school's beauty and talent pageant, Rihanna never realized how talented she really was. The 17-year-old green-eyed cutie was in the right place at the right time that enabled Evan Rogers (known for work with Christina Aguilera, 'NSYNC', Jessica Simpson, and others), a talented and highly successful pop music composer to spot her powerful singing voice and for him to decide to do something about it. After hearing her belt out a couple of tunes Evan realized Rihanna's future star power and invited her to New York to record some tracks.

It's no wonder that all it took was a quick audition with Shawn 'Jay-Z' Carter, President and CEO of Def Jam Recordings, for the green-eyed beauty to solidify a recording contract with the multi-million dollar record company. While that performance ended up changing her life forever, the sweet natured island girl laughs at her own naivet? at the time. 'I was in the lobby shaking!' remembers Rihanna with a healthy dose of her Bajan accent hanging onto every one of her words. 'I saw just a little bit of Jay's face down the hall and I was just like, 'Oh my God! I had never met a celebrity, and to meet a celebrity who's also the president of the label, that was crazy!!' Her obvious talent impressed Jay-Z enough for the label to sign her to a 6-album contract at the young age of 16.

Young and beautiful urban dance-pop diva wanted to concentrate on her music career, so she has moved to the USA in 2005. She credited support from her family for playing a key role in her success so far. Nevertheless, having left her family and friends in Barbados for suburban Connecticut, and not old enough to get into most American clubs, Rihanna is impressively focused. Rihanna is preparing for full-fledged stardom while finishing high school, spending eight hours a day with a choreographer and fifteen hours a week with a tutor amid a globe-trotting performance schedule and recently devouring The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. But she was more than a little giddy when she encountered her idol. And when she says 'I don't even have time for boys!' this is really true, she is more than busy!
